Established in 1928, De Bortoli Wines is a family-owned company based in Bilbul, in the NSW Riverina. Today the business is managed by the third generation of the De Bortoli family and is Australia’s sixth-largest wine company. Employing more than 400 people in its Australian operation, De Bortoli Wines has an annual turnover in excess of $170 million. De Bortoli Wines understands its customers are increasingly concerned about environmental issues, and is interested in minimising the environmental impacts of its manufacturing processes.

The De Bortoli team wanted an industrial-grade PV solution with technologies that have a demonstrated track record of high performance in Australian conditions. Comprising European made equipment including 960 Q CELLS Q.PRO-G2 modules, the PV system provides on-site electricity generation from 3 sub generators installed on two buildings and connected to three loads (including 2 refrigeration loads). The array is forecast to reduce electrical energy consumption by more than 349 MWh per year, resulting in a reduction of CO² emissions by more than 297 tonnes annually.

Barossa Vintners does not only utilise the sun to grow grapes for its famous wines, but also to harness its energy to produce clean electricity. The 90 kWp Q.PRO-G2 system reduce s the winery’s carbon emissions by 22% and  will result in annual savings of $26,000 in energy and maintenance costs. Installed by The Solar Project from South Australia, installation received dollar for dollar funding from AusIndustry through the Clean Tech Food and Foundries Investment Program. It is truly a landmark project for South Australian wineries and will hopefully encourage other wineries and the broader food and beverage sector to pursue energy-efficient business practices through clean energy supply.

In January 2015 a 100kW Q CELLS solar array was commissioned on the main Nu Fruit facility in Wangaratta. Established in 1972, Nu Fruit is a fresh produce wholesaler owned and operated by the second generation of the Campagna family. The company, based primarily in Wangaratta, supplies fresh fruit and vegetables and other produce across NSW, SA and Victoria. Nu Fruit locally employs 60 people, and uses a total cold chain solution with fully computerized operations, making them an innovative leader in the fresh produce market.

Even though the Nu Fruit site has modern and efficient cool rooms, refrigeration loads consume a significant amount of electricity. Nu Fruit decided to turn to solar PV as a means to reduce costs. Company Director, Dean Campagna, indicated that electricity costs are a major overhead and by installing solar he anticipated offsetting more than 10% of electricity demand from the grid. The Q CELLS array was installed and commissioned by local company, McDonald O’Brien. System components were supplied by The Greenpower Company.

Solar is a great solution for regional businesses that often face higher electricity prices than consumers in more populated areas. Onsite solar arrays can drastically reduce these costs and reduce the dependence of grid power.

The system comprises of 392x Q.PRO-G3 255Wp modules and five SMA Sunny Tripower inverters. Modules were installed facing approximately north and on tilt frames. Savings in excess of $30,000 per year are anticipated.

Established in 2004, Stefano’s Mildura Brewery is a unique Australian operated business producing six permanent naturally brewed beers from inside the former Astor Theatre in Mildura’s restaurant precinct. The team at Mildura Brewery were interested in minimizing the environmental effects of its power usage whilst implementing a cost effective solution to reduce its power needs.

Stefano’s Midura Brewery have implemented on site electricity generation consisting of dual solar photovoltaic generators connected to their electrical load, primarily consisting of refrigeration, bottling and fermenting processing loads, running 7 days a week.

The Stefano’s Mildura Brewery team selected industrial grade solution including technologies with a demonstrated track record of high performance in Australian Conditions. The system was delivered by an experienced project team, on time and on budget. The choice of premium quality technology with a professionally built system will result in a long system design life.

Melbourne Zoo, the world’s first certified carbon neutral zoo, installed solar PV, taking another step in their plan to be the world’s leading zoo-based conservation organisation. Three separate rooftop systems of more than 100 kilowatt (kW) have been built on the zoo’s buildings. The PV plants have been reliably producing energy since the beginning of September for the zoo’s self-consumption of solar electricity.

Q CELLS delivered 390 Q CELLS Q.PRO-G3 255 solar panels for the units. Q CELLS modules supply both the zoo’s elephant and baboon enclosures and its headquarters with electricity. The PV system were designed and installed by Madison Australia. It will provide 140MWh of electricity yearly, the equivalent energy needs of 22 average Victorian homes – offsetting approximately 160 tons of CO2 per annum. The zoo has therefore been added to the list of green credentials for the world’s first certified carbon neutral zoo.

Zoo Director Kevin Tanner said that solar power is in line with other zoo sustainability initiatives, including the water treatment plant which produces water for maintaining the grounds and flushing toilets and the extensive composting program which turns zoo waste into excellent garden compost. The innovative composting system uses green waste such as branches, ‘zoo poo’ from elephants and other herbivores, and the biodegradable packaging used in the zoo’s catering operations.

“Increasing our solar power capacity is a crucial element of our energy strategy,” explained Zoo Director Kevin Tanner. “As a carbon neutral organization, all our new developments place a high priority on sustainability.” Already in the past, the zoo’s corporate centre had replaced all of its fluorescent and incandescent bulbs with energy-efficient LEDs, incredibly reducing its demand from 22,000 kWh per year to 6,200 kWh. These measures, together with the PV systems, have allowed the zoo to claim carbon neutral status through Low Carbon Australia under the Australian Government’s National Carbon Offset Standard.

Experts in designing high performance commercial solar systems, Madison Australia Director Yorath Briscoe said, “On average, Melbourne has just 46 sunny and 139 partly sunny days per annum. As Q CELLS modules are the best performers in low light conditions, achieving 98% of their rated efficiency in low light conditions, their panels were the natural choice for us.“

Autonomous Energy has designed, installed and commissioned this 100kW Q.PRO-G2 commercial system for Blacktown Workers Sports Club located in Western Sydney. The installation covers six roof surfaces of different shapes and orientations. The varying pitch and orientation of each roof section was carefully taken into account when this system was designed and is utilised to help spread the solar generation curve over the day to better match the site’s energy load profile – with an estimated payback period of four years. Solar power can be a work of art. The jet-black Q.PEAK BLK modules create a stunning contrast to the white roof of the Araluen Arts Centre and the beautiful surroundings of the native Australian landscape. Installed by national solar developer Ingenero, our modules are a perfect match for the high aesthetic requirements of the Arts Centre. The system will generate approximately 302 megawatt hours of electricity each year, enough to power around 35 homes in Alice Springs. The system is expected to save an estimated 203 tonnes of COs emissions per annum. The system is part of the government initiative Alice Solar City.

Solar energy is a great way to give your company the edge – and it stacks up financially as well. Local business owner Terry McMahon took this on board. In June 2012, a 82.7 kWp system consisting of 352 Q.PRO-G2 modules was commissioned atop his commercial buildings on the Gold Coast. By reducing his company’s overheads and carbon footprint, Terry not only realised a financial benefit straight away, but he is also more prepared for future electricity price increases. With Q CELLS supplying the modules, local installer LC Energy and the engineering team were able to design and install a high quality system to the customer’s specifications and requirements.
